Cleanings and Exams
Brushing and flossing your teeth every day are essential habits for keeping your mouth healthy and preventing a wide array of serious oral health complications. While important, however, they are only a part of the equation. In addition to brushing and flossing, the American Dental Association also recommends that you have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined twice a year. Gregory A. Williams, DMD, PC can help.
The ADA recommends having your teeth professionally cleaned at least twice a year, or once every six months. Even if you brush and floss your teeth properly every day, there are some areas of your mouth that are more difficult to reach properly and thoroughly clean. As a result, plaque, bacteria, and other debris can accumulate in these areas, which can then lead to issues such as cavities and gum disease.
With professional cleanings, we can clean all of the surfaces of your teeth, even the ones that you cannot reach properly on your own. We are also able to eliminate all buildup, including calcified plaque, or tartar. This hard buildup cannot be removed no matter how much you brush. By removing all buildup from your teeth, we can help you prevent oral health issues from developing.
Cleanings are very simple procedures. We begin by scraping the surfaces of your teeth. We work carefully to thoroughly eliminate the buildup from all surfaces of your teeth. After scraping the surfaces of your teeth, we use an electric handpiece and a special dental polish to polish them. The polish contains abrasives that scrub the surfaces of your teeth clean. Finally, we floss your teeth, which helps to eliminate buildup as well as clean away loose debris and residue that has accumulated during the course of your cleaning.
In addition to your dental cleanings, exams are also recommended at least twice a year. They are typically performed in the same appointment as your dental cleanings. Exams are performed to detect the presence of different oral health issues that you might not even know are there. We are experienced in detecting the smallest issues. This allows for immediate treatment to restore your oral health and prevent more serious consequences from developing.
Like your cleanings, exams are straightforward and simple. We look over the surfaces of your teeth, checking for cracks, chips, decay, and cavities. Your gums are assessed for redness and swelling. We check for gum recession and the development of periodontal pockets. We also perform an oral cancer screening at each exam. During this screening, we look over your intraoral tissues, checking for growths, lesions, and other abnormalities that can point toward oral cancer.
Another integral part of your dental exams is dental x-rays. These x-ray images allow us to see the hidden areas of your mouth, including between your teeth and below your gumline. They provide us with a unique view of your mouth and allow us to detect issues that might not be apparent just by looking at your teeth and gums. With x-rays, we have a complete picture of your oral health so that we can provide you with the best treatment possible.
