1. Share the Bounty
You know there is a good chance that you will return from trick-or-treating with more sweets than you can or should eat. With this in mind, talk to your kids about how you can share some candy … and reduce the temptation in the weeks afterward.
2. Set Limits
While you are talking to your kids, discuss what is an acceptable amount to eat at one time. Another consideration is when to enjoy a sweet treat. The best time is after a meal because you are somewhat full, and you have a good amount of saliva already to help rinse away candy residue.
3. Chew Some Sugar-Free Gum
Sugar-free gum helps in a couple ways. It keeps the saliva flowing, which helps loosen and remove candy particles from teeth. It also can neutralize acids that can contribute to cavities.
4. Stick to the Basics
In other words, remember to do the things you should be doing all year. Brush your teeth twice daily and floss every day. Also, keep up with your regular dental visits for professional cleanings and exams.
