You brush and floss daily. You see us every six months for an exam and cleaning. You eat teeth-friendly foods. Right? Unfortunately, choosing foods that are good for your oral health can be tougher than it seems.

That’s because some foods that seem nutritious aren’t as “healthy” as they seem. This video illustrates the point, by showing how some breakfast foods stack up against a glazed doughnut. You know the doughnut has a lot of sugar (about 15 grams). You may think you’ll do better with a bowl of cereal, yogurt, a whole-grain roll, oatmeal and fruit, or a smoothie.

But those foods actually have as much – or more – sugar as the doughnut. In the case of a smoothie from Dunkin’ Donuts, it’s a whopping 54 grams of sugar.

The good news is, the video offers less sugary alternatives for each of the foods. So instead of Yoplait original yogurt, choose the same flavor in its Greek yogurt and cut the sugar in half.

We are happy to suggest foods that are good for your teeth and help you avoid hidden sugars. Just ask next time you’re in our office. To schedule an appointment in Tigard, OR, call Premier Dental and Implants today at 503-210-9802 or contact us online
